It is fitting that each of the 11 rooms at this historic landmark hotel is named after a St. Croix plantation. In 1733, Denmark bought St. Croix from France, seeking a plantation colony to complement their growing port at St. Thomas. They divided the 28 mile-long island into some 400 estates, each approximately 150 acres. European owners gave evocative names to the estates and, eventually, to more than 300 sugar, cotton, and cattle plantations they established, ranging in size from 75 to 750 acres.

Each name inspires the imagination, and many are featured in island history books. To name just a few:

All for the Better: Johann Diedrich named this east end estate and lived on it in the late 18th century. Rumors said he once was a privateer living on top of Buck Island where he could view the shipping lanes, but he became the respected Town Clerk at Christiansted.

Work and Rest: At 700 acres, this was one of the largest plantations that the Danish government owned. After slavery was abolished, in the late 19th century, the governor broke Work & Rest up into nearly 40 sections for distribution to former slaves.

Mon Bijou: This mid-island plantation is thought to have had a rare water mill, one of few that had a steady enough supply of water to operate it.

Lower Love: An impressive sugar factory was built here in the 19th century to serve the productive mid-island planters. It had a huge main room with high ceilings and an enormous 112-foot steam chimney, the finest on St. Croix, which loomed over the countryside.
